Paul Joseph – Health and Fitness Travel

I recently caught up with wellness Travel Specialist and Entrepreneur, Paul Joseph, the co-founder of Health and Fitness Travel, a global leader in wellness holidays worldwide.  Their holidays are top of my wishlist and will give you serious wanderlust vibes. Always ahead of the curve in pioneering new health programmes that revive the soul, boost fitness or address serious health issues, the worldwide wellness tourism industry has now become a multi-billion sector, growing faster than travel in general. Paul has a wealth of PR, Marketing, Sales and Management experience in the health and tourism industry, consulting leading hotels on their wellness strategy and contributing regularly to broadcast and media interviews.

What Inspired you to have a career in the travel and fitness arena and did you know it was always what you wanted to do?

Travel and wellness has always had a big influence on my life which started with my mother taking me on spa & well-being trips and experiencing travel at a young age, thanks to her job at the time. Following a car accident at aged 20 which left me with multiple injuries, I took to alternative methods to heal my body where my love of yoga started. I grew up a dreamer and the dream of creating a wellness hub providing a personalised service that recognised what the true meaning of a wellness holiday is became my motivation and a reality. I had a nagging feeling for years of being in a career that neither inspired nor rewarded me sufficiently. One evening I opened my computer and began to write a plan for the travel company I had dreamt of creating for years; enabling me to realise two of my most important dreams: to work for myself and to enjoy my passion: travel and wellness. My business partner and I worked obsessively for years, 7 years on we have an international business sending thousands of clients away each year to focus on their health and fitness around the world.

Fitness holidays and retreats are becoming more and more popular, What makes your
holidays unique?
We create trend-setting, cutting edge holidays with exclusive health and fitness programmes, we carefully research and test all of our destinations. Our wellness holidays are results-driven where our clients return home feeling fabulous and able to make significant healthy changes in their everyday life.

What has been your proudest career moment so far?
Launching Health and Fitness Travel in 2010 was my proudest moment, I had worked on the idea for some time and felt confident we would be successful. Opening an office in Australia in 2014 was another proud moment as we wanted to always grow our business globally.

How do you balance all the aspects of running your own business?
One of my reasons to success has been learning how to maintain a healthy balance to running my business. Keeping fit and healthy is key to me staying on top and managing multiple different roles within my business. I exercise every day, whether a swim, cycle, yoga or boxing; this gives me more energy to tackle everyday decisions.

What advice would you give to your younger self?
Build a great team, believe in your ability and inspire others to follow you. Listen to people around you and make notes, it’s amazing what you can learn from others. Always keep your passion for what you do, as this will keep you focused to work relentlessly. I’ve made mistakes whilst running my own business but these have also been valuable as I would not have been able to grow and develop my skills as a business owner. Working for yourself can be challenging at times, especially when I do so many different roles within the business but my passion makes it all worthwhile.

Whats the biggest lesson you have learnt in your entrepreneurial journey?
To be prepared to learn every day and dream big – if you don’t try new things, you will never learn. The world is always changing and as technology advances, we need to stay ahead. It’s been important to learn everything I can about my industry and always challenge myself.

Whats your morning routine and what do you have for breakfast?
I squeeze a whole lemon every morning along with a vegetable juice including Moringa powder, chia seeds and spirulina. I also start my day with a short yoga practice or Pranayama breathing. On alternative days, I do a 15-minute Tabata/HITT workout. I’m a big believer in if you win the morning, you win the day and my routine boosts my productivity significantly. Exercise puts me in a great mind frame before starting work and I also work through my emails early.

How do you stay motivated?
My best motivator is building a business I’m proud of. It’s important to delegate some of my work so I can spend as much time as possible to focus my energy to my company’s advantage. I also encourage my employees to discover their main motivation so we can focus all our joint efforts on reaching our goals.

What three things/ products can’t you live without?
Probiotics, my yoga mat and iPhone.

How do you like to spend your downtime?
Regular yoga and meditation aids with my relaxation. I also do high intensity workouts such as boxing which helps me pound out that stressful energy and directing my mental focus away from work. I also take regular wellness breaks to unplug and make sure Sundays are
regular technology free days

You obviously travel a great deal, where is your favourite place and why?
I am a creature of habit and every year return to the Caribbean and Italy which I love. Owning a travel company means I constantly have new countries to visit. We created a new product range called Discover Recover™ holidays that allow you to tailor-make your wellness adventure from a choice of tours and excursions, so I will be visiting some of the destinations we have introduced including Costa Rica, Bali and New Zealand.

Best and worst things about your job?
Visiting the wellness resorts and meeting the people who work there is a highlight and I love influencing about new wellness programmes we create with them that are successful! Trying out treatments and activities is wonderful too, but it’s not my favourite part. The best part of my job is hearing and reading all the positive feedback we receive from our clients each week, it’s so satisfying to have them call and email us to tell us what a fantastic healthy holiday experience they had. I also love the flexibility and control I have in bringing my ideas
to life.

My least favourite part is inefficiency and my time is valuable, I want to work smart and not have my time wasted by incompetence. Externally there are some people in our industry who cause us to expand extra effort and energy to overcome problems they have created
due to poor communication and attention to detail, with a blame culture to avoid responsibility.
